Easter is almost here and with all decor already tucked away we are busy making things for spring and summer.  For your dining room table you can add a pop of color with placemats and centerpieces. And we think that this Burlap Placemat is perfect for spring with a beautiful ribbon woven through!

Supplies:

Roll of burlap or burlap by the yard

Scissors

Organza Ribbon

Sewing machine, needle, and thread

Instructions:

You can by the burlap by the yard /meter, or custom cut. Cut the placemat into rectangles the size you want. 

Next you will sew around the edge of your burlap.  This will allow you to fray the edges but will create a clean stopping point.  I came in about 1″ from the edge on all sides.  If you use thread approximately the same color as the burlap it will not be seen.

Once the edges are sewn begin pulling the horizontal and vertical pieces of burlap thread out until the edges are frayed back to your stitch.

Once the edges have been frayed you will fold one edge up about 2″.  You will then mark the burlap at 1″ increments.  This will be where you will cut to feed the ribbon through.

Cut at each mark creating a slit just large enough for your ribbon to slip through.  Repeat with remaining sides.

Next feed the ribbon through the openings you’ve made.  The ribbon will create a basket weave look with the burlap.

Feed pieces of ribbon through each side.  Make sure that the ribbon comes out the top of your placemat at 2 matching corners and to the under side at the other 2 corners.  You’ll then tie a bow on the top of the corners opposite each other and a simple knot in the ribbon on the backside.

Your placemat is finished and ready to use!  These will be a great addition to your table decor!

Burlap Squares A4 Sheet Fringed Edges

These sweet little framed flowers fit perfectly on every wall for a clean fresh twist.

Each of the flowers are strips of knit tied together, yarn, any other fabric, paper you find around the house, or craft shops. Each type of knit is a little different , giving each flower a different look.  Oh, and those little stems are just old branches that I gathered from outside.

Step 1
Cut the fabric or use the yarn to create three pom poms. The strips depending on how big you prefer the pom poms, the ones in the photo are 1.5 cm / 2 cm  width and 6 / 7cm long.

Step 2
Find sticks in nature and cut down to desired length.

Step 3
Hot glue pom poms to the end of the sticks. Set aside.

Step 4
You can buy frames anywhere in bargain shops, or paint some of the old ones in white or the color you prefer. Paint frame with Wall paint for a shabby look. Let dry and repeat. NOTE: Requires 2-3 coats. Let dry between coats.

Step 5

Cut burlap squares 29 x 21 cm, or depending on the frame size.

Step 6
Glue glass bottles onto burlap canvas board using glass adhesive. Let dry overnight.

Step 7
Place burlap canvas panel into frame, and secure from behind with packing tape.

Step 8
Place pom pom stems into glass bottles.

I love the simple beauty of these little guys.

Here’s how I made mine:

 I purchased some jute…

…and cut a piece long enough to attach to my pine cone, yet still fit around a tree branch.  I glued the two ends to the top of the pine cone.

The pinecones i gathered from the outside, park trees.

Just be sure that it hangs nicely once it’s attached.

Then tie a bow out of some ribbon (mine is beige satin ribbon, 1.5 inches wide). You can use any color ribbon.

Then, I found that attaching the bow to the jute actually allows the bow to hang a little nicer.  I started by attaching the bow to the top of the pine cone but that was making the ribbon ends looks wonky and not hang nicely. 

Then, cut the ends of the ribbon at a diagonal, whatever length you like. My ribbon lengths varied, depending on the pine cone size, but the ribbon ends were generally as long as the pine cone. 

Now, make several more……hang…….and enjoy! :)

Bad news, folks: While you may want your fresh tree to last well into the New Year, it actually doesn't take more than a few days of heat and neglect to dry out a fresh one. With proper care, most trees can last five weeks or more. Here's how:

1. Choose a healthy, green tree with few brown needles.

If you buy your tree from a garden store or roadside lot, it has likely come from out-of-state and has been exposed to drying winds in transit. Run a few branches through your hands; the needles should feel pliable and not fall off. Then, raise the tree a few inches off the ground and drop it onto the trunk. Very few green needles should drop off, though it's fine for the tree to lose a few brown ones. And select a tree that has been displayed in a shady, not a sunny, location.

2. Trim the trunk (and then trim it again).

When you get home, make a fresh one-inch cut off the end of the trunk and place the tree in a bucket of warm water,if you're not putting it up right away. This cut rids any dried-over resin that might be blocking the tree from absorbing water.

Store it in an unheated garage or area that's protected from wind and freezing temperatures. When you do bring it inside, make another one-inch cut off the trunk and place it in a sturdy stand that holds at least one gallon of water. Fill the stand with one quart of water for every inch of the trunk's diameter.

3. Place it away from heat sources, like fireplaces, radiators, and air ducts.

There's nothing more Christmas-y than a beautifully decorated tree beside a fireplace, but if you use your fireplace regularly, it could contribute to drying out your tree quicker. If your home is prone to dryness in general, try running a humidifer.

4. Keep the water level above the base of the trunk.

Too little water causes resin to form over the cut end of the trunk. Once that happens, the tree stops absorbing water and dries out quickly. The jury is still out on whether or not additives in the water, like bleach, aspirin, and sugar, are really necessary to keep a tree fresh. They likely won't hurt, but most experts agree that plenty of plain water is really all you need to keep a tree fresh.

5. Take your tree down before it dries out.

If you wait too long, you'll have lots more dead pine needles covering your floor. The easiest way to clean up fallen needles is with your vacuum's hose. Skip the attachments and use just the end of the hose to draw needles directly into the bag or canister.
